The Mind's Eye (2015 - 2022)

Religion has long been one of the subjects of my photography. I made a series about Buddhism in Laos and Myanmar, stories about the Islam in Holland and Iran and photos about ancestor worship in Vietnam. My interest in religion began thirty years ago when I read "The Confessions" of Aurelius Augustine. This theologian from the fourth century AD treats all the life issues philosophically and tries to understand who God is. In later years I read Karen Armstrongs books about comparative religion and myths, and I became interested in the history of early Christianity and later on in Mary Magdalene in particular. Mary Magdalene is one of the most mysterious women I have 'met' in history. At first she was the woman she is to so many: the sinner who repented. But when I read more, I discovered a woman who has roamed countless in European legends, myths, art and literature for more than two thousand years. She became a mystic, the woman of Jesus, the mother of his child, symbol of the Holy Grail and an initiated disciple of the Gnostic literature and wisdom. A powerful woman, independent and spiritual.
